The section of the site that was not designated as a historic landmark was demolished, and a large, modern city hall was built on the site. Since the remaining section was designated as a historic landmark, it was left untouched and slowly fell into disrepair. In 2023, a group of people from Schwelm and the surrounding area came together to work toward preserving the old buildings and breathing new life into the spaces. They founded the association “Brauerei Schwelm e.V.” and applied for grants to convert the site into a space for culture, art, and community, with the goal of creating accessible opportunities for people to gather. The primary goal was to create a space for everyone that combines leisure, communication, and socializing with engaging events. Sustainability and the preservation of the building’s structure are always just as much a focus as fun and enjoyment. It was clear to everyone involved that this could only work with a great deal of volunteer commitment and dedication.
In the meantime, a first cozy event space has been created (capacity: 60–65 guests), which allows us to do on a small scale what we hope to achieve later in the large hall: culture and art combined with fun in the center of Schwelm.
Thanks to funding from the “3.Ort” program of the State Ministry of Science and Culture, and with strong support from the city administration and elected officials in Schwelm, work is currently underway to convert part of the old buildings into an event space for up to 300 people. The dedicated volunteer board—composed of experts covering all areas of expertise relevant to the association and the renovation—is working alongside a professional project manager to lay the groundwork for a vibrant cultural venue that will contribute to the long-term revitalization of Schwelm’s downtown area.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="https://transform.nrw/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMGL8691-scaled.jpg" alt="A bustling square filled with people in front of the historic factory buildings of the former brewery.
