The Cultural Office is a staff unit within the City of Wuppertal’s Cultural Administration. Its main tasks include promoting Wuppertal’s independent cultural scene, engaging in networking and advocacy, and organizing its own events. In addition, the Cultural Office addresses current, cross-cultural issues, such as sustainability and cultural education.

“Art, Culture, and Sustainability” has now become a central issue in the context of cultural policy and must therefore be given the importance it deserves in local governments as well. This is because, on the one hand, the various dimensions of sustainability influence the arts sector, and on the other hand, it is artists and creative professionals who engage with a wide range of aspects of sustainability in their work. In Wuppertal’s independent arts scene in particular, knowledge-based and artistic engagement with the themes and goals of sustainability has been a presence for many years.
Against this backdrop—which is relevant to society as a whole as well as to Wuppertal specifically—the Cultural Office sees its role as addressing this issue as a partner of transform.NRW.
Sustainability at the City of Wuppertal’s Cultural Office
The Cultural Office aims to establish an inclusive, equitable funding policy that pursues sustainability goals—such as minimum fee standards and energy efficiency—with the goal of strengthening a resilient cultural infrastructure in Wuppertal’s independent arts scene. In addition, cultural education is to be further expanded and promoted. Through interagency collaboration within the city administration, the Cultural Office aims to ensure that the issue of sustainability and its objectives are recognized and implemented—including through the integration of art and culture—for example, in urban development.
