Founded more than 30 years ago, ecosign—The Academy for Sustainable Design is Germany’s first educational institution dedicated to sustainability, design, and management, and remains a pioneer in shaping a future-oriented education. Education is the key to change: That is why, in addition to its bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in “Sustainable Design” and “Sustainable Design Management,” ecosign also offers customized continuing education courses and consulting services on sustainability topics.

Design is a key factor in value chains and, at the same time, an aesthetic discipline. Art has introduced us to the aesthetics of reduction, and it would be a remarkable feat of design to translate the joy of reduction into our lifestyles. Ultimately, natural resources diminish with use, while cultural and aesthetic resources flourish. So when we engage with art and culture, we are actively conserving resources.
In cooperation with transform.NRW, ecosign aims to highlight these principles and jointly explore ways in which culture and design can serve as drivers of socio-ecological transformation.

For ecosign, sustainability means ensuring the future viability of the planet, ecosystems, and society. Sustainability is not viewed as a static state, but rather as a constantly evolving process that requires active shaping.
It is only through design that sustainability becomes tangible and takes effect in various forms within the concrete realities of life.
Since its founding in 1994, ecosign has embodied the connection between sustainability and design in its very name: The fusion of ecology and design is ecosign.
