The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundeskunsthalle) organizes exhibitions on cultural history, archaeology, science, and other fields of knowledge. The focus is on exploring key issues through works of art from all eras, including contemporary and interdisciplinary perspectives. In addition, it presents an independent program featuring theater, performance, dance, and music, and addresses current social issues through its discourse program.

The Bundeskunsthalle’s program is an integral part of its mission to promote an open, inclusive, and diverse cultural vision—as evidenced, among other things, by its 2025–2026 thematic years focused on ecological and social sustainability. As a venue for cultural reflection and interdisciplinary exchange, it brings together art, science, and the public to discuss key issues of socio-ecological transformation.
Through exhibitions, discussions, lectures, and workshops, the Bundeskunsthalle aims to inspire the creative industries and open up new perspectives.
With strong partners in the transform.NRW collaborative project, all of this can be achieved more effectively. Each institution contributes its own strengths—in the case of the Bundeskunsthalle, these are art, culture, and infrastructure—and thus helps to communicate issues affecting society as a whole, such as climate change and transformation, to a broad public. As a nonprofit institution of the federal government and all sixteen federal states, the Bundeskunsthalle fulfills its educational mission in the most sustainable way possible as part of the transform.NRW consortium. In addition, it can benefit from the diverse expertise of its consortium partners, attract new visitor groups, and gain important insights for its future work.
Sustainability at the Bundeskunsthalle
“We promote culture through the knowledge of our time and view sustainability as a central mission for humanity. Through our programming and actions, we demonstrate how sustainability can be achieved and how culture can serve as a driving force behind it.” The Bundeskunsthalle adopted this mission statement in 2023. A standing working group with members from all areas of the institution meets regularly and implements both small and large-scale measures on the path to climate neutrality by 2035.
