Since 2002, PACT Zollverein has been synonymous with groundbreaking developments in the fields of dance, performance, theater, media, and the visual arts. Its distinguished stage program—featuring world premieres, co-productions, and guest performances—brings together people with diverse life stories and perspectives.
As an artists’ residence, PACT creates spaces for open-ended artistic processes, hosting approximately 140 residents from around the world each year. Its platforms foster dialogue between the arts, academia, and students from various disciplines. Bolstered by the establishment of long-term funding, a local and international following, and stable social connections and resources, PACT founded WerkStadt in 2017 as its own workspace and meeting place in Essen-Katernberg.

PACT Zollverein aims to holistically embed environmental, social, and cultural sustainability. The institution seeks to conserve resources, promote biodiversity, ensure fair working conditions, and support social transformation through artistic practice. A key priority is reducing CO₂ emissions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement.
