As an umbrella organization for municipalities, associations, and the independent arts scene, Kulturraum Niederrhein e.V. promotes networking and professional development in western North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 1997, it has served as the coordinating body for the Regional Culture Program of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition to conferences, the Kulturraum Niederrhein organizes cross-border collaborative projects, including the thematic series of the Rhine-Meuse MUSEUM NETWORK and the fellowship program of the trinational BORDERLAND RESIDENCIES. Its mission statement, “Sustainable Cultural Region of the Lower Rhine,” addresses contemporary issues and equips projects with visions for the future.
Within the network of districts and municipalities in the Lower Rhine region, the Kulturraum has established art and cultural networks that, through joint projects, are tackling the complex, multi-faceted structure of sustainability. After all, it has been true—and not just since Beuys—that the center of the periphery is a hub for European issues of transformation.
Since 2022, Kunstraum Niederrhein has been providing applicants to the Regional Culture Program NRW with information on the possibilities and feasibility of qualifying projects under the umbrella of sustainability as a regional strategy.
As a small, flexible, and agile organization, Kulturraum Niederrhein focuses its efforts on networking, communication, and professional development. The goal is to embed sustainability considerations in all three areas as a natural part of cultural and artistic practice.
