The Freibad Mirke is one of the oldest outdoor pools in Germany. After the city of Wuppertal ceased operations in 2010, the Pro Mirke association resumed operations in 2011 with a small, temporary “pool within a pool” and is working to revitalize this historic site: The goal is to convert it into a natural outdoor pool with biological water treatment for year-round operation and versatile use. The project is not intended solely as a swimming facility, but as a cultural and social gathering place that creates accessible spaces for experiences and recreation for people in densely populated neighborhoods. In particular, it aims to offer children an easy entry point to health, culture, and education.
